Business Names

Everything you need to know about starting and maintaining an Australian business name.

What is the difference between a business name and a trading name?

Trading Names

Prior to 28 May, 2012, a list of names used by entities in connection with their business operations was maintained by the Australian Business Register (ABR). They still have these names listed but will cease to do so as of 31 October 2018. Trading names are not registered business names. Those entities with these trading names have until Oct 2018 to either register them as business names or incorporate, otherwise they will no longer remain in force.

Business Names

Business names must be registered with ASIC and are names under which entities can carry out their business activities. The ABR maintains a record of business names, including the identity of those who hold the business name.
